Mouldy smelly door seals on washing machines has become very common in recent years and the majority of door seals I replace is because of this problem rather than having a leak.
The reason is because using only liquid, liquid tablets or any other detergents that does not contain bleach will increase the build up of bacteria in the machine and on the door seal and also the fact that everyone washes at very low temperatures nowadays. What needs to be done to keep your washing machine free from gunk, bacteria and nasty smells is to switch to a powder and to use a regular hot wash of at least 60 degrees, unfortunately if you have already got the black mouldy (bacteria) build up on your door seal you'll find that you can not remove it and you will have to replace your door seal.
