Smelly Washing Machines: Causes, Solutions & Prevention

Bad smells from washing machines are a common problem — but it’s rarely a fault with the machine itself. Instead, smells usually come from bacteria and residue build-up caused by how the machine is used.Causes of a Smelly Washing Machine:

• Regular low-temperature washes (below 60°C)
  
• Using liquid detergents or pods (no bleaching agents)
  
• Plastic outer tubs in modern machines trap bacteria
  
• Overdosing detergent causing sticky build-up
  

How to Fix It:

1. Run a hot (90°C) maintenance wash with no laundry.
   
2. Use a small amount of biological powder detergent.
   
3. Clean detergent drawer and door seals regularly.
   
4. Check for blocked filters or drain hoses.
   

Preventing Future Smells:

• Do a hot wash (60°C or above) at least once a month.
  
• Use powder detergent — it’s better at killing bacteria.
  
• Avoid using too much detergent.
  
• Leave the door and drawer open to dry after use.
  

Avoid wasting money on "miracle" cleaners — regular maintenance washes and proper detergent use are usually all you need to keep smells away.
